Shelleyan Orphan got the inspiration for their
name from a poem called Alastor: Or, the Spirit of Solitude
by a romantic poet,
Percy
Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). The Shelleyan Orphan band name
was bourne through their admiration for this poet, and this
particular poem.
Shelleyan Orphan are more commonly known as Caroline Crawley
(Vocals, Clarinet) and Jemaur ("Jem") Tayle (Vocals,
Guitar). They moved from Bournemouth to London in 1982 seeking
oboe and string instrument players to add to the group's sound.
Shelleyan Orphan have creative and interesting male/female
vocals with amazing harmonies. The instrumentation includes
guitar (electric and acoustic), double bass, drums, strings,
dulcimer, oboe and probably many other instruments that don't
come to mind at the moment.
You can go to the Sounds section
of the site to hear snippets of what they sound like on different
releases. I'd urge you to seek out their albums if you like
any of what you hear. There's no such thing as a bad Shelleyan
Orphan song.
